What about multiple users?
It is now common to have more than one computer connected to the internet in the home or office. Not all of the computers will be using the internet at the same time. Any internet connection or service provider allowing multiple computers to access the internet at the same time will split the available bandwidth between the computers. Most internet activity is downloading a webpage, email or small files; during this type of activity the computer only accesses the internet for short periods of time. When downloading large files like movies, music or software updates a constant connection is required until the process is complete. This will affect the available bandwidth available for other computers on the network at that time, but it will not prevent them from accessing the internet. HughesNet has a number of systems and service plans available to accommodate various internet access needs. Should you need to run two or more computers simultaneously the Pro Plan is one the most reasonable options.
Hughnet internet speeds:
Download speeds can be temporarily slowed when system usage exceeds the download threshold for an extended period of time, therefore, maximum download speeds are not guaranteed. During peak hours it is also likely that the upload speed will be lower than the speeds indicated. See the HughesNet Fair Access Policy for more information. When running VPN over satellite data speeds may be reduced by as much as 50-75%. Despite the high speeds offered by HNS, it is not recommended for time-sensitive applications like multi-player “twitch” games due to signal latency.
Dymanic IP address or NAT (Network Address Translation) for security
With each service plan, except business internet, HughesNet provides a dynamically allocated IP address to the HN7000S modem. These IP addresses are assigned via Network Translation enabling dynamic assignment of private IP’s to devices. Dynamic IP address (or NAT) are randomly assigned IP addresses from a pool of available addresses. Each time you connect with the internet a new IP address is used. . Use of individual IP addresses keeps your service private from users outside of your network, keeping your information safe.
Static IP Addresses
Static IP addresses are available for all service plans. Static IP addresses must be ordered separately, except for Business Internet Service plans.
A static IP address is a permanent Internet address for a computer, much like a street address or telephone number. The use of Static IP’s make managing internet connections more secure and email access easier. Usually a subscriber’s Internet Provider will determine whether the users is assigned a Dynamic IP or a Static IP. Due to the limited number of static IP addresses available, most residential clients are given dynamic IP addresses.
Dynamic IP addresses (also referred to as a NAT or Network Address Translation) are randomly assigned IP addresses from a pool of available addresses. When connecting to the Internet, users with a dynamic IP addresses use a new IP address each time they connect to the Internet.
A Static IP address is necessary for:
- Remote accessing your home computer &/or some applications
- Accessing some protected or secure web sites
- Operating a home email or web server
- Offering e-commerce transactions with Secured Socket Layered (SSL) encryptions
- Using video conferencing services
- Using some applications requiring internet access
